Russia was the birthplace of the most modern blood libel, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The 24 “protocols” are a forged document that outlines the Jewish plans to establish world domination and destroy the Christian world. In 1905, the First Russian Revolution broke out, and in the same year, the anti-Semitic religious writer S. A. Nilus published the full text of the Protocols. The book was most likely written or compiled by the policeman M. Golovinsky on the initiative of the head of the international department of the Tsarist secret police in Paris and the vice-director of the Police Department in 1905–1906, P. I. Rachkovsky.

The October Revolution made adjustments to the myth of the “conspiracy of the Elders of Zion.” In a document allegedly found in the possession of the murdered Red Army commander, the Jew Zunder (Tsunder) in 1918, the “Jewish conspiracy” is identified with the October Revolution. A modernized forgery arrived in Berlin in 1919 thanks to the activities of two White emigrants and Black Hundreds P. N. Shabelsky-Bork and F. V. Vinberg. According to the English researcher Norman Cohn, expressed in the book “The Blessing of Genocide: The Myth of the Worldwide Jewish Conspiracy and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion” (1967), Vinberg met the first translator of the Protocols into German, Ludwig Müller. In Berlin, Winberg and Shabelsky-Bork collaborated on the yearbook "Ray of Light", the third issue of which (May 1920) contains the full text of Nilus's book. All issues of the yearbook obsessively talked about the presence of a Jewish-Masonic-Bolshevik conspiracy, as did Vinberg’s own book “The Way of the Cross,” which was translated into German. In German, Winberg condemned the Weimar Republic and Soviet Russia and “explained” their similarities: “The common connection of both our and the German revolution is that both coups d’etat were carried out artificially, through a worldwide, everywhere-spread network of intrigues and secret machinations of the Jewish Masonic organizations. In these organizations, the lower layers of Freemasonry play the role of a blind instrument of the famous “World Jewish Council,” and the upper layers (degrees) of Freemasonry are completely absorbed and filled with Jews, so that the highest management is concentrated exclusively in Jewish hands.” All these stories about Jewish conspiracies were spoken in German. Vinberg was right in asserting that the Protocols would be a success in Germany.

As Cohn notes, “If from its founding in 1919 the Nazi Party was already characterized by rampant anti-Semitism, then hatred of Russian communism overwhelmed it only in 1921-1922, primarily, apparently, thanks to Rosenberg. He became a link between Russian anti-Semitic Black Hundreds and German anti-Semitic racists.” Already in 1920, Germany was flooded with hundreds of thousands of copies of the Protocols and commentaries on them. Russian anti-Semitism has enriched German anti-Semitism. A new portion of slander gave rise to a new bloody anti-Jewish march across Europe. In 1922, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Jew Walter Rathenau, whom they called “the Elder of Zion,” fell at the hands of murderous German nationalists. Alfred Rosenberg, the official ideologist of the Nazi Party, argued in his pamphlet “The Plague in Russia” that Rathenau and his ilk were “long ripe for prison and the gallows.” This article of his was published by many newspapers two weeks before the murder of the minister.

In 1923, Rosenberg published a book entitled The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and Jewish World Politics, which went through three editions in one year. “In less than two years after Hitler came to power,” writes Cohn, “the intellectual and moral level in Germany had fallen so low that the Minister of Education was able to declare the Protocols one of the main books for reading in schools.” This fake has taken pride of place in the system of instilling hatred of Jews. Hitler welcomed the Protocols, although long before Mein Kampf was written, in 1921, the London Times correspondent in Istanbul, Philip Graves, had already proven that it was a fake. “The spread of the Jewish people, on which its existence at all times is based,” Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf, “is shown most magnificently in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which the Jews so hate.” The Nazis picked up the legend about the danger of Jewish dominance, which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Jews. The events of World War II showed a small group of Jewish physicists that the power of the Nazis could increase dramatically due to a great scientific discovery. The Jews who worked on the project described in this essay sought to prevent the continuation of the Holocaust. The “protocols” of these atomic sages are not written. The answer came not on paper, but in action.

Critical mass is the minimum mass of a fissile substance at which a self-sustaining, chain nuclear fission reaction in an atomic bomb can occur.

A critical meeting - a meeting that destroyed one of the most fruitful collaborations in the history of science, destroyed the hopes of both sides for mutual understanding, turned friends into enemies, undermined faith in human values ​​​​surpassing glory, priority in science and devotion to the fatherland, leading two great men to great defeats . In the critical meeting, a critical mass of spiritual connections disappeared, which provided a chain reaction of creative communication and previously led to the solution of one of the most complex mysteries of nature.

“Technological progress gives us ever more perfect means of moving backward,” wrote Aldous Huxley. During World War II, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. This ended the war. The bombs were supposed to be dropped on Germany, but the war with the latter ended before the bombs were made. If bombs had been dropped on Germany, the course of history might have been completely different. Jews would not be the only main victims of the war: the initiators and organizers of the war, who carried out the final solution to the Jewish question, would be among those against whom nuclear weapons were used. Crematoria, gas chambers, executions and hangings without trial, turning the human body into soap, into leather for bags and suitcases, making wigs and mattresses from women's hair and agricultural fertilizers from the ashes of burnt Jewish corpses - not conventional weapons used against Jews - were would be put on a par with nuclear burning of people alive, radiation damage and associated genetic mutations for generations to come.

The end of World War II was marked not only by the production of American nuclear bombs, but also by the non-production of a nuclear bomb by the Nazis. If the Germans had succeeded in the military nuclear project, Hitler would have continued to rule Germany and Europe. But Germany, which had outstanding nuclear physicists led by Werner Heisenberg during the war, did not construct a nuclear bomb.

In 1927, twenty-six-year-old Heisenberg became a professor at the University of Leipzig and the youngest professor in German history. In 1933, at the age of 32, he became the world's youngest Nobel laureate for his formulation of the uncertainty principle and his major contribution to the creation of quantum mechanics (he received the prize for 1932). One of the hypotheses for the failure of the Germans in the atomic project: the great Heisenberg made a great mistake by incorrectly calculating the critical mass of nuclear fuel. He estimated it at 15 tons, while it was about a thousand times smaller: the Hiroshima bomb weighed 56 kilograms. Heisenberg himself, unlike his many critics and accusers of collaborating with the Nazis, denied that he had calculated the critical mass (he admitted his studies in calculating the critical mass and the error in them in August 1945, after the bombing of Hiroshima, in a conversation with the author of the discovery of fission nucleus, Nobel laureate (1944), German chemist Otto Gann, recorded on a tape recorder by a listening device installed by British intelligence at the place where German nuclear scientists were interned after the war in Farm Hall in England).

On May 8, 1924, two German Nobel Prize laureates in physics, Philipp Lenard (1905) and Johann Stark (1919), supported Hitler's NSDAP program in the Great German Gazette. Lenard and Stark were members of a group of 30 physicists who put forward the concept of “German physics.” They rejected the new quantum physics and the theory of relativity as dogmatic theories unrelated to reality. They argued that the correct approach to explaining physical phenomena should be based on classical physics, which was crowded out by the “false” theories of relativity and quantum mechanics invented by the Jews.

Lenard and Stark believed that the correct description of reality is provided by an analysis of the experiment within the framework of visual representations of classical physics, undermined by abstract “Jewish physics.” They and their like-minded people believed that the “correct classical” understanding of physics was given only to the Aryans. Lenard and Stark's group called themselves "national explorers." They called quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity “the world’s Jewish bluff.” In their opinion, a Jewish conspiracy against the truth has developed in physics.

The Austrian journalist of Jewish origin Robert Jung, in his book “Brighter than a Thousand Suns” about the history of the creation of the American nuclear bomb (1958), wrote: “The scientific world of the Weimar Republic did not take seriously the excursions of a few of its members into the nebulous areas of demagogic racism. So far, professional achievements were valued more than anything else. The adherents of “German physics,” who turned into agitators, did not attract attention for long, and their “absurd cries” were not given any significance.”

Clever Jewish physicists did not pay attention to the nationalist screamers. They were rationalists. They believed that absurdity could not win. But the absurd won: the irrational Nazis seized power over reason. On April 17, 1933, the Nobel Prize winner in physics (1925) of Jewish origin, James Frank, upon retiring, remarked: “We Germans of Jewish origin are now considered as strangers and as enemies in our own country.” The complete emancipation of Jews in the Weimar Republic was not final: “Germans of Jewish origin” turned out to be strangers.

In July 1937, Johann Stark published the article “White Jews in Physics” in the official SS newspaper Black Corps. It divided into erroneous Jewish (theoretical) and correct Aryan (experimental) physics. The (German) theorist Heisenberg was one of the main targets of criticism. Stark accused him of not joining the National Socialist Party, refusing to sign Stark's scientific manifesto in support of Hitler, and promoting Einstein's theory of relativity. Stark wrote: “In 1933, Heisenberg, at the same time as Einstein’s students, Schrödinger and Dirac, received the Nobel Prize. This decision, which was under Jewish influence, was made by the Nobel Committee demonstratively; it is a direct challenge to National Socialist Germany. Heisenberg belongs to the viceroys of Jewry in the life of the German spirit. These people must disappear just like the Jews themselves."

Heisenberg was extremely concerned about the article and, in an attempt to justify himself, wrote a letter to Reichsführer SS Himmler. Heisenberg began to be summoned for interrogation to the Berlin Gestapo office on Prinz Albrecht Strasse. The investigation lasted almost a year. All charges were dropped. Heisenberg soon received prestigious appointments: he headed the Institute of Physics of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society and became a professor at the University of Berlin. He was free to travel throughout occupied Europe. In the summer of 1939 he was allowed to visit the United States. He headed the German nuclear project. Everything indicated that he enjoyed the extraordinary trust of the Nazi leadership.

In 1941, Hitler's divisions landed in North Africa, captured Yugoslavia and Greece, and in September 1941 successfully advanced on Moscow. Many in the Third Reich believed that victory was near. At this point, Heisenberg traveled to occupied Copenhagen and met with his teacher and main colleague in the creation of quantum mechanics, Niels Bohr.

Einstein wrote about Bohr: “It has always seemed to me a miracle that this wavering and full of contradictions basis was enough to allow Bohr, a man with brilliant intuition and subtle instincts, to find the most important laws of spectral lines and electron shells of atoms, including their significance for chemistry. It still seems like a miracle to me (Einstein wrote these lines 36 years after the discovery of the atom by Bohr. - A.G.). This is the highest musicality in the field of thought." In 1922, when Bohr received the Nobel Prize for the quantum theory of the atom, Einstein wrote about him in a letter to the famous physicist Paul Ehrenfest: “He is a real genius.<...>I have absolute confidence in his way of thinking."

Bohr undoubtedly discovered Heisenberg. Meeting him at the University of Göttingen in 1922, he led the twenty-year-old scientist into atomic physics. Heisenberg wrote about this meeting: “After the end of the discussion, he (Bohr. - A.G.) came up to me and offered to take a walk in Geinberg, in the vicinity of Göttingen, to which I, of course, readily agreed. Wandering through the forested hills of Geinberg, we<...>for the first time discussed in detail the main physical and philosophical problems of modern atomic theory, and this conversation<...>had a decisive influence on my future path in life.” In discussions carried out on joint hikes, sailing, skiing and cycling over a number of years, teacher and student worked closely together to create quantum mechanics. For Heisenberg, Bohr was a major figure in science. Their fruitful cooperation lasted for many years. In discussions with Bohr, Heisenberg's main brainchild was born - the uncertainty principle.

After World War II, physics became more than a science. The creation of the nuclear bomb gave physicists the most favored nation status given to people who can kill effectively. The ability to completely destroy is greatly respected by those who were and are taught: “thou shalt not kill”! In 1941, physics was still one of the fields of knowledge that could excite only a small number of scientific cranks with its problems, but the grapes of wrath were already ripening. Some understood what enormous destructive power lay in the nuclei of atoms. But in 1941, physicists did not know for sure whether it was possible to create a nuclear bomb. The complex technological challenge of the lethal use of nuclear energy has arisen.

In 1941, a new mystery was added to this mystery: why did Heisenberg come to occupied Copenhagen? He could not help but understand that his meeting, he, a representative of the occupiers and in their service, with a representative of the occupied nation would not please his teacher. What was the purpose of his mission? What happened at the meeting between Bohr and Heisenberg? The contents of the meeting are not precisely known. One thing is clear: after this meeting there was nothing left of the friendship between Bohr and Heisenberg.

In 1958, during Bohr's lifetime (he died in 1962), Robert Jung wrote that at that meeting Heisenberg proposed a secret plan to Bohr, which the Dane did not support. The essence of the plan: an agreement between physicists of the warring parties - the anti-German allies and Germany - to prevent the creation of a nuclear bomb in their countries. Jung relied on a number of vague and contradictory evidence from Heisenberg, who, although not persecuted for collaborating with the Nazis, felt condemned by many physicists. Bohr was silent.

In 1998, English playwright Michael Frayn's play Copenhagen was staged in London. In it, the author describes the meeting of Bohr and Heisenberg in 1941. In 2000, Frayne received the prestigious award for best theater work in English. The resonance of the play was colossal. Numerous interpretations have emerged of what happened during the meeting and its impact on the development of the German atomic project.

The play again features Heisenberg's version of the contents of the meeting in Copenhagen - denial of the fact of his calculation of the critical mass and a proposal to conclude an international alliance of physicists from both warring sides against the creation of nuclear weapons. The author does not insist on this version; there is another interpretation in the text, but there is uncertainty in the description of the meeting. The play was such a success that Bohr's children decided to publish drafts of letters written but not sent by their father to Heisenberg in 1958. The letters were included in a copy of Jung's book read by Bohr. Bohr's archives were due to be published in 2012, 50 years after the scientist's death. Frayn's play accelerated the publication of the archives by 10 years. Forty years after Bohr's death and 26 years after Heisenberg's death (he died in 1976), light has been shed on the contents of a mysterious conversation between two colleagues, friends and enemies.

He suggested that I collaborate with the Nazis.”

Subsequently, Heisenberg was unable to consistently explain his arrival in Copenhagen. He sounded contradictory and vague. However, it can be assumed that the scientist was very concerned. In July 1941, news of an American experiment to create a nuclear bomb was published in a Stockholm newspaper. The Stockholms Tidningen newspaper wrote: “According to reports from London, experiments are being carried out in the United States to create a new bomb. The material used in the bomb is uranium. Using the energy contained in this chemical element, you can get an explosion of unprecedented force. A bomb weighing 5 kilograms would leave a crater one kilometer deep and 40 kilometers in radius. All structures within a distance of 150 kilometers will be destroyed.”

Heisenberg was very concerned about this message and was overwhelmed by the desire to find out the truth with the help of Bohr. Perhaps he decided to find out whether Bohr was in contact with British and American colleagues to construct a bomb. It is possible that he wanted to understand whether Bohr had come up with a way to create a nuclear bomb that Heisenberg did not know about. He wanted to attract Bohr to cooperate in the atomic project. However, Heisenberg may have wanted to protect his “half-Jewish” teacher from Nazi persecution. It could also be that Heisenberg wanted to demonstrate how high he had risen in Germany, but remained Bohr's friend, colleague and student. After the war, a legend was born that Heisenberg went to Bohr for advice on whether the participation of physicists in the creation of deadly weapons was acceptable.

According to the German scientist, Bohr said that the use of nuclear energy for military purposes is inevitable and justified. Over the years, Heisenberg transformed his version and turned it into an attempt to organize an international conspiracy of physicists against the creation of nuclear weapons. He spread the legend about the resistance of German physicists to Hitler, which he retold to Jung. But after the publication of the book “Brighter than a Thousand Suns,” Jung changed his mind and called the version of the passive resistance of German physicists to the Nazis a “myth.”

American Heisenberg biographer David Cassidy writes: “Heisenberg’s views during this period were no different from those of other patriotic non-Jewish Germans in artistic, academic or military circles. These social groups ardently supported German policies in the name of the German nation. When the German army marched victoriously across Europe in the early years of the war, these circles welcomed reports of victories at the fronts.” It is quite possible that Heisenberg believed that if the war dragged on, it could only be won with the help of a nuclear bomb, and this explained his visit to Copenhagen. This interpretation was put forward by Bohr's son Auge, Nobel Prize winner in physics (1975), in his retelling of a conversation with his father: “In a private conversation with my father, Heisenberg raised the question of the military use of atomic energy. But he was left with the impression that Heisenberg believed that new opportunities could determine the outcome of the war if it dragged on.” One of Bohr’s close collaborators, Stefan Rosenthal, a Polish Jew, later a Danish nuclear scientist and quantum mechanics specialist who worked at Bohr’s institute during Heisenberg’s visit, recalled: “All I remember is that Bohr was very excited after the conversation and that he He quoted something like this from Heisenberg: “You must understand that if I take part in a project, it is because I am firmly convinced of its reality.” Heisenberg's wife Elisabeth wrote in her memoirs that her husband "constantly tormented himself" with the thought that the Allies, with better resources, could create a bomb and use it against Germany.

On September 30, 1943, the day before the planned arrest and deportation of Danish Jews to death camps, Bohr, a Jewish mother and an outspoken anti-Nazi, fled to neutral Sweden, from there to England, and joined the Manhattan Project to create an American nuclear bomb at Los Alamos. Together with Bohr, the Danish underground transported approximately 7,200 Danish Jews to Sweden on small fishing boats. The Danes hid another 500 people in their houses and farms. The naval attache of the German embassy in Copenhagen, Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz, who was declared Righteous Among the Nations in Israel 28 years later, warned the Danes about Himmler’s plan for the deportation and extermination of Danish Jews. There was no time to notify the 450 people who ended up in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Among them was Bora's mother's sister Hannah Adler. However, the majority of Danish Jews, supported by their compatriots and in the Nazi camp, survived.

In 1943, the German institute for the creation of a nuclear bomb moved from Berlin and disappeared from the sight of American and British intelligence. Nobody knew what Heisenberg and his collaborators were doing in this field or where they were. It was not until May 1944 that American intelligence learned that Heisenberg's new laboratory was located near the city of Hechingen in southern Germany and that funds had been allocated to the German uranium project to build a two-hundred-million-volt cyclotron. This find makes me think about another reason for the meeting of Heisenberg and Bohr at that time.

In 1941, there were only two cyclotrons in Europe, devices that could separate isotopes and produce the uranium-235 needed for a bomb. One cyclotron was located in Paris at Frederic Joliot-Curie, the second at the Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. The Germans did not have a cyclotron. However, they needed not only a cyclotron, but also keeping uranium work on it in the strictest confidence. In Paris, Heisenberg expected neither cooperation nor secrecy. His closest friend Niels Bohr worked in Copenhagen. Heisenberg hoped to persuade him to join the German project.

Heisenberg was wrong not only in calculating the critical mass, he was wrong in Bohr, in assessing his indestructible anti-Nazi position. Heisenberg's underestimation of Bohr's critical stance towards Nazism led to a crisis in the relationship between the two old friends and colleagues and ruined one of the most fruitful collaborations in the history of physics. It was also a critical meeting for the Nazi nuclear project. Heisenberg lost a partner who could have changed the course of his research, and perhaps the course of the war. After the failure with Bohr, Heisenberg demanded money from the Minister of Armaments A. Speer for the construction of a cyclotron (A. Speer wrote about this in his memoirs), and in 1944 it became clear that he received this money.

Heisenberg was not the only one who miscalculated the critical mass and the feasibility of quickly creating a nuclear bomb. Hitler was fascinated and delighted by the new German V1 and V2 rockets with which the Nazis bombarded London. The damage caused to the English capital by German missiles was incomparably less than that caused by British bombing of German cities. Hitler and his advisers, who, of course, could not have included Jews in their ranks, did not understand the importance of nuclear weapons for the outcome of the war.

The Fuhrer made a mistake, perhaps equal in significance to the one made by Napoleon during the war with England. Then a young American inventor came to the Emperor of France and invited him to build a steam fleet, with the help of which Napoleon could land in England, despite the unstable weather. Ships without sails? This seemed incredible to the emperor, and he drove out the inventor of the steam fleet, Robert Fulton. England was saved. The history of the 19th century could have developed differently if not for Napoleon's shortsightedness. The story of this historical episode convinced American President Roosevelt to start a nuclear project.

Michael Frayn noted one moral paradox: the anti-fascist Bohr subsequently took part in the Manhattan nuclear project, which led to the death of 120 thousand people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while the German patriot Heisenberg, formally working for the Nazi war machine, did nothing that would lead to to the death of at least one person. After the war, many scientists at international conferences shunned Heisenberg. Bohr did not agree to cooperate with his beloved student, colleague and friend, because he considered him and himself “as representatives of two opposite sides of a mortal battle,” the battle with Nazism. The spirit of hatred and contempt for the Germans, not only the Nazis, can be felt in Einstein’s letter to Otto Hann dated January 28, 1949: “The crime of the Germans is the most heinous crime ever committed in the history of peoples called civilized. However, after the victory over the Nazis, pacifism prevailed. Bohr opposed the use of nuclear bombs against the Japanese. In 1944, he met with British Prime Minister W. Churchill, and then with American President F. D. Roosevelt in an attempt to dissuade them from using nuclear weapons. He sent them a memorandum expressing his position. As a result of the discussion of the Bohr memorandum, the Memorandum of Negotiations between President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill, dated September 19, 1944, appeared. It said:

2. We declare that the widest cooperation is envisaged between the United States of America and England in the field of further development of the Tube Alloys project for military purposes after the defeat of Japan until it is suspended by mutual consent of the parties.

3. We insist on an investigation into the activities of Professor Bohr; "We need to make sure that he is not responsible for leaking information, especially to the Russians."

Soon, Churchill sent the following note to his scientific adviser, the leader of the British nuclear program, physicist Professor Lindemann - Lord Charwell: “The President and I are seriously concerned about Professor Bohr. How did it happen that he was allowed to work? He is such an ardent supporter of glasnost! After all, it was he who told Judge Frankfurter about the ongoing work, who rather puzzled the president with his knowledge. He himself admitted that he regularly corresponds with the Russian professor, his old friend (meaning Academician P. L. Kapitsa, future Nobel Prize laureate in physics (1978). - A. To prevent this, the USA and other countries of the “golden billion” maintain a vicious way of managing and condemn the remaining countries, where the majority of the world’s population lives, to economic backwardness, poverty, mass hunger and extinction.
